The presentation starts with two statements:
(1) Models are essential for an integrated assessment and management of ecological and socioeconomical developments, but
(2) we have a severe lack of process knowledge and data for improving existing models or building new models or model elements.
Some examples are given for these two statements. Then the paper will focus on the two questions: By which experimental design can we get the badly needed process knowledge and data? How can we integrate the knowledge to a practical relevant scale: from the microprocess to the landscape level? One eye on the increase of knowlegde, the other one directed on its application for decision support modeling can contribute to sustainable management. Sustainability of natural resources, health and vitality, productive functions, biological diversity, protective functions, socio-economic functions of ecosystems.
