In order to get a tool for the aggregation and integration of knowledge
and hypotheses concerning the plant internal trade-
off between growth and defence, project C2 develops a plant growth simulation model.
This simulation model is
called PLATHO (PLAnts as Tree and Herb Objects), as it considers
the general processes common to all plants and handles different
herbaceous and woody species solely as special cases of the class
of plants. PLATHO links together concepts from existing
plant growth simulation models with a new mechanistic approach to simulate environmental
effects on secondary metabolite concentrations. The model can be used as a research tool
that can help scientists to interprete their experimental results, to investigate
theoretical questions about the possible behaviour of
the system plant-mycorrhizosphere and to extrapolate results from laboratory
to field conditions and to long term time intervals.
