During the first phase (1998-2001) of the project the following work packages were completed:
|
- The complete infrastructure for continuous micrometeorological measurements, data acquisition and storage was completed and operated.
- A novel system for quasi-continuous radiation measurement, with high spectral, spatial and time resolution, was developed and deployed at the SFB site Kranzberger Forst (see figs. 1 and 2).

- A 3-D radiation transport model developed by the team of G.Gravenhorst/Göttingen for spruce stands was adapted to the mixed beech/spruce stand at the SFB site, and first test runs were performed.
- A novel Free-Air Ozone Fumigation System was developed which allows for continuously doubling ambient ozone levels in the canopies of mature trees. During the entire vegetation periods of 2000 and 2001 5 beech and 5 spruce trees at the Kranzberg site were fumigated with this system(2x ambient up to 150 ppb max.), see figs. 3 and 4.
