This project is expected to lead to a deeper understanding of the different defense mechanisms of potatoes (induced or preformed) which are activated after an infection with Phytophthora infestans . Therefore the differentially expressed genes which are induced after the infection are going to be identificated systematically. Through the analysis of the differentially regulated genes of resistant and susceptible cultivars a clear distinction has to be made between genes which are specific for pathogen induced reactions and genes which are specific for general defense mechanisms. The expression of the identified genes can be studied under various environments. Preformed defense mechanisms are going to be identified by comparing cDNAs of potato cultivars with a different level of resistance.
